Can Good Design Prevent the Next Recession?

If you’re paying even minor attention to the U.S. financial news cycle (or your 401k for that matter), you’ve noticed that the world is facing some serious economic uncertainty. Not only is your investment rate of return likely plummeting, but you’re hearing “downturn” and “recession” everywhere you look. If you’re like me, you’ve worried a bit and you may have tried to do some research to understand where we might be going and why - and if there’s anything we can do to stop the decline.

My doom scrolling (and the general internet rabbit hole) led me to a recent article from NPR’s Planet Money, Fear the Vibe Shift: Are We Entering a Recession?. The article proposes a few reasons why the U.S. economy might be heading into recession territory, including production and supply chain challenges, government economic mismanagement, and the far-reaching impact of conflicts in Europe.

There is, however, another proposed reason for an economic downturn - us.

Planet Money introduces the theories of John Maynard Keynes, an early 20th century economist:

For Keynes, free markets were riddled with imperfections that could conspire to lower prosperity for everyone. One important imperfection: our "animal spirits." Keynes posited that people aren't perfectly rational, especially in times of distress or panic or tremendous uncertainty — like during and after the stock market crash of 1929. Instead, Keynes said, we often make investing, spending, saving, and many other decisions based on our animal spirits: our feelings, emotions, beliefs, and psychological quirks.

In other words, when we’re in times of distress and confusion (COVID, anyone?) we’re not the rational actors that a marketing textbook makes us out to be. The good news though, is that if the problem is “us”, there’s likely something we can do about it. It starts with thinking about our personal financial touchpoints in a better way, and, as designers of financial experiences, making sure that we’re designing to tame our “animal spirits”.

Designing for the “Animal Spirit”

Too many financial experience decisions are made in a boardroom without involving direct feedback and opinions from the potential users and “animal spirits” using the app, website, tool, or physical branch in question.

At a corporate level, we’re trained to examine the macroeconomic trends and factors influencing the world around us and we use that information to make business decisions. Those things are important but, in reality, how those trends impact our businesses may have more to do with how they impact the people on the other end of the experiences we offer.

Do you remember the bank run scene in the classic holiday movie It’s a Wonderful Life? I’m not going to go into the financial details of what led to it, but in the movie, there is A LOT of economic uncertainty for the Building and Loan customers, and their “animal spirits” are running amok. In fact, humans and their “animal spirits” are running to withdraw every penny they have all at once.

I don’t think George Bailey conducted customer research, but he didn’t have to. His customers were his neighbors and he knew them incredibly well. As the head of the bank, he focused on helping them, inspiring confidence, and making sure they didn’t make emotional decisions that would financially harm themselves and others in Bedford Falls. Whether you run a community bank like Bailey or Fortune 500 financial institution - that’s the type of experience your customers deserve.

Experience design backed by real research into the people on the other side of the product is the only way to ensure we’re actually solving the problems that need to be solved and inspiring confidence in our institutions. Understanding our customers, the transactions they want to make, and how money matters can be intensely personal is the key to balancing technology and humanity in times of uncertainty. It’s also not a bad idea to strike that balance when things are stable too.

So, can design thinking prevent the next recession?

I can’t say for sure, but I do know that a seamless and human-centered experience makes me behave more rationally, less prone to emotional decision-making, and gives me confidence that an institution is looking out for me - and maybe even doing some of that worrying so I don’t have to.

Our institutions aren’t perfect, and neither was George Bailey. But like George, we can, and should, strive to create experiences that improve our businesses by supporting the people we serve.

Importance of User Experience in Online Business

User Experience in Online Business

Starting or owning Online Business like E-commerce, sales, learning etc. and not getting optimum business/customers. Have you checked about User Experience of your product/services ever, if not then then don’t waste time and work on improving user experience.

User experience is not only limited to what user feels, it is directly proportional to the business. Rich in UX results in to more Re-business, builds trust, and increases emotional touch which converts into more business.

Business grows with customers and  if they are happy with your services they will love to come back and they will advertise for you. Best publicity is mouth publicity.

Evolution of IT industry and UX
In early ages of IT, company or individual who is having technological capabilities wins the business. Then more companies became technology capable then Usability of services/product came into picture. Company with Technology + Usable products won the business in that age. Then 3rd generation came, where most of the companies have thought of technology and implemented Usability, now company with technology capabilities + usable product + Better user experience is winning the business.

Your competitor is just one click away
In an online business company, competition is very high and critical because your competitor is just one click away from you. If customer/user is not getting proper care or satisfied with your product/service there are lots of other websites are available for him in just one click. So for acquiring new customers and re-business from old customers UX plays an important role.

Myth about UX

Myth 1: UX is about web design – This is the biggest Myth about UX. UX is far bigger than that, UX is an Ecosystem in which Human, product, service, company, business etc. are involved.

Myth 2: UX is about how beautiful site/app looks. UX is not about how site looks, it is about how customers’ intend/need is getting fulfilled using less/effective efforts which should bring feeling of happiness and satisfaction.

Example: E-commerce and UX

For an E-commerce retail online business, UX starts from very first interaction of your business with customers i.e. Website/app etc. and it continues till complete customer journey. Some questions about E-commerce which can tell about UX of your business,

- Is user able to find easily what he/she wants?
- Is user able to make required decisions to purchase that product/service?
- How simple is the complete check-out process?
- If purchased, then are you able to deliver the product/service in best time for him/her?
- Are you offering any after purchasing services like assistant, guide etc.?
- How you are building relationship with your customers?

From where you should start
Firstly make your website/app usability compliance. Hire a Usability Expert or User Experience Expert for complete user research. Note that this research is not only about website/app but also contains analysis of your complete service/process.
Prepare complete customer journey map and map it with customer experience. Find opportunistic areas for improvement in experience.

The business value of UX design

What do your friend's startup, your small local business and a large company such as Google have in common? No, this isn't a trick question.

The answer is actually fairly simple and intuitive. All of the aforementioned businesses depend on users enjoying their products and services in order to continue doing business successfully.
In the recent years many have noticed the importance of UX design and are investing more and more into its research and development.

Be it physical or digital, a product is bound to rouse both an emotional and intellectual response in its consumer based not only on the way it works but also how it looks and feels. Whether that experience is going to be a good one or a bad one is going to make an effect on your sales, and this is exactly where a good UX design team proves itself to be absolutely crucial.

Why “X” marks the spot

UX design is about two things only – the User and the Experience. Give your users a positive experience and they will reward you with their trust and their business. Companies with highly effective UX have increased their revenue  by 37%, and top 10 UX leaders in America outperform the S&P with close to triple  the returns - a significant lead.

When experiencing your product leaves the user with a foul taste in their mouth, they will quickly take their business elsewhere. 90% of users reported they stopped using an app due to poor performance, and 86% deleted or uninstalled an app as a result of encountering problems with it's functionality or design. Studies show that 86% of users think that an exceptional customer experience is worth paying extra. With these figures in mind, it is not difficult to understand why user experience focused companies like Apple, Google, Adobe, Dropbox and Amazon are year after year leaders of their respectable fields.

While having a great product is paramount, in today's market it often is not enough to keep you ahead of the curve.

This is why investing into UX design has proved to be a game-changing strategy.  A pleasing UX has been proven to earn the users' interest, business, and most of all – their loyalty. 48% of users say that arriving on a business site that isn't working well on mobile will be seen as an indication of the business simply not caring, and 52% said that a bad mobile experience made them less likely to engage with a company in the future.

The principle extends beyond just mobile devices; 40% of users will abandon a web page if it takes more than three seconds to load, while 79% will search for another site to complete their task.

Designing experiences

But what about design? How important is actual aesthetic property of your website (or a product) when it comes to user experience?

An experiment conducted by M. Tractinsky tested relationships between users' perceptions of a computerized system's beauty and its usability.
Its outcome showed that, undeniably, the role the aesthetics plays in HCI design is a major one, and should be kept in mind at all times when catering to the users' needs.

It seems safe to conclude that the business value of UX design is so colossal, one can simply not afford to ignore the importance of a highly skilled team of UX designers putting their expertise into crafting the experience your users are going to undergo and enjoy while engaged with your service or product.

Engaging and connecting with the users is what every company should strive toward, and what good UX design helps you achieve. With design focused on UX, a company is forced to create for their customer. A relationship is formed and it grows, bonding the customer with the product.

Good Customer Care is must for better CX

For any company or product what is really important to retain their customer, to increase their customer base & to increase business – ‘Customer Experience’. Customer experience is the experience of customers felt in overall journey of company/service/product etc. Good CX coverts more business & more satisfied customers and Bad CX not only reduces customers but also affects company or brand identity, trust, business. In today’s world most of the companies are using IVR system for providing ‘Customer care’ or post purchase help. It is really good to have a ‘Customer care’ system for customers but having ‘customer care’ is not sufficient unless it is designed for customers. We all have felt frustrations in calling customer care and getting answers multiple times specially in telecom, eCommerce, retail etc.

Effects of Bad Customer Care Services

  1. Affects decision making – Your previous bad experience of Customer support can stop you in purchasing or consuming services or product of that brand in future.
  2. Negative publicity through word of mouth – When we get very bad experience, we share our experience with our neighbors, colleagues, friends, relatives and this leads to negative publicity of brand/company/service/product etc.
  3. Negative image in Social networking – Today Social media is giving us more wings to share our experience and making path easy to reach big audience. Frustrated customers directly post their bad experience on social media like Facebook page of product, twitter page, personal blogs, company forums etc. which results in negative publicity of brand/company/service/product in social media.

  4. Reduction in Customer retention rate - Different companies are offering similar kind of products then retention of their customer depends upon good ‘Customer services’ like after sales ‘customer care’. Bad Customer support also reduces retention of your customer base.
  5. Reduces Business - If customers are not staying with your services or new people are not becoming your customer due to negative brand image then business is getting reduced.

Conclusion

Customer experience is a key factor in today’s era for business growth. Customer experience doesn’t only come from a product, it comes from an overall customer journey like if a customer is purchasing ‘Mobile’ phone online then good customer experience will depend upon following aspects,
  1. Is a customer is able to purchase mobile easily?
  2. Is he/she able to find best mobile phone?
  3. Is he/she able to use purchased mobile phone?
  4. If any problem comes in product then he/she is able to get resolution by customer care or not?

‘Customer Care’ is one the key aspect in complete ‘Customer Experience’ & we should focus on improving Usability of Customer care.

Push Notifications: Fulfilling needs or increasing irritation

Having smartphone is really a good for any person, having lots of mobile apps in that … wow amazing. My mobile apps are really my life saver, they helps me in day to day life. For my ticket booking, my bills, shopping, groceries, my social networks, my utility apps, my office or business work I have apps in my phone. But wait what is happening, my phone is ringing (beeps)/vibrating very frequently. What is this … Oh These are Push notifications. Some of my chat messenger, some of e-commerce offers, some of discount offers etc. Do I really need so much push notifications, No…!!! then why all apps are throwing my such rubbish offers. I am irritated now.
For business it is a nice way to reach their customers. It directly touches customers through mobile. Push notifications are type of notifications which comes to users directly on mobile, outside their app, which drags user and forces to go into mobile app.

Generally Push notifications are used for sending Chat, sending updates in social network, sending offers, sending recommendations etc. Wait list is not over yet companies are sending Push Notifications for OTPs, sending ads, sending birthday reminder, for reminding that you have not used our app in last 1 week, for updating mobile app etc.

A normal smart phone user has approximately 10-20 active mobile apps. Now days every mobile app has started sending Push notifications. Imagine 20 applications are sending 5 push notifications daily to user resulting 100 push notifications in a day. Let’s say for 1 notification user takes 4 seconds to process. Then He/she is spending 400 seconds in a day.  Means 200 mins/month and 40 hours /year.

Seriously 40 hours, can you imagine if  I could have included 'chat messenger app' in this rough calculation then it could have reached more than 400 hours per year. With the evolution of app based market, Flood of Push notifications has started to end users. Which is now started becoming an irritation for users. Flood of Push notifications is now started affecting complete user experience.

How it is affecting UX

Lots of push notifications leads to ignorance and irritation. Both of them are real danger for a successful business and a better user experience.
Ignorance: User can start ignoring Push notifications when it becomes very frequent. By which user may loss important information, which can affect complete use. Also ‘ignorance effect’ of push can reduce ‘Trust in your BRAND’ which can lead to loss in Business.

Irritation: Frequent push can also irritate user, which can result really bad. User may also uninstall your mobile app, in other words direct cut in customer relations and business.

If you take care for User they will take care for you

For better business a better UX is important and in case of Push notifications this is a deciding factor. Push notifications are really necessary for both ‘Business’ and ‘user’. So keeping this path clean, optimized and relevant is really necessary for both.

How to make Push effective

Only one way you can make your push effective, - “By sending only relevant” in other words, more relevant information in less push. Companies should always keep their Customers prime. Give an analysis on ‘set of Push notifications’ and categorize them in 3 categories
a. Really required for User
b. Really required for Business and user both
c. Required for Business

Now, minimize the count and frequency of Push notifications falling under category c.
User/customer should get feeling of ‘Delighted and Satisfaction’ through your service, which require ‘Push should be very Relevant’.

For UX designers, it is not a task you to design better Push Notification, but design a better communication medium between Business and Customer by keeping better User Experience in mind always.

What is logo?

In simple terms logo identifies a business in its simplest form via the use of a mark and icon.
“Justcreative.com”

Logo is the identity of the business which is memorable and recognizable it should not describe what company does. There are three basic types of logos:
1. Iconic/symbolic
2.Logo type/Word mark
3. Combination Marks

1. Iconic/symbol

In iconic and symbol such imagery is used which convey abstract representation of the company. For example : Apple

2. Logotype/Word mark

In common language we can say that company name is used in text format but in stylish way or bold way. Sometimes designer play with negative or positive area with in font to convey the nature of the business. For Ex: Fedex

One can see the forward arrow in the FedEx logo which conveys their type of business.

3. Combination Marks

It is combination of text and symbol and icon which represent your company or organization. Symbol includes additional value to your logo by placing it with text. For ex: Domino’s Pizza
