A person opens an app on a bright afternoon and can’t decipher the text. Another strains to hear a video in a roaring café. Someone recovering from a wrist injury struggles to complete a simple online form. None of them identify as having a disability, yet each is temporarily shut out by design choices that didn’t account for real-world use.

This is the heart of accessibility in UX design. It ensures that digital experiences, whether a government portal or a streaming app, remain usable for everyone. Accessibility isn’t about satisfying a rulebook. It’s about widening the doorway so every user can enter without struggle.

More than a billion people globally live with a disability, according to the World Health Organization. But accessible design reaches far beyond that number. High-contrast text helps both people with low vision and anyone reading outdoors. Captions support those who are deaf and also commuters watching silently. Voice commands began as assistive technology; now they’re an everyday convenience. Inclusive design consistently elevates the experience for all.

Disabilities Can Be Situational, Temporary, or Permanent

A clearer way to think about accessibility is to understand how fluid impairment can be. Disabilities aren’t always fixed. They can arise from context, circumstance, or life events.

1. Situational Barriers

These emerge from the environment rather than a medical condition:

• Sun glare washing out text

• Blue-light filters altering color

• Slippery ground limiting multitasking

• Crowded spaces drowning out audio

• Interacting across languages

These moments are brief but shape daily interaction with technology.

2. Temporary Impairments

Challenges that resolve with time:

• Lost glasses

• Fatigue reducing focus

• A broken arm limiting motor control

• Muffled hearing after a concert

• A concussion affecting memory

Temporary does not mean minor. Good design anticipates these phases.

3. Permanent Disabilities

Long-term or lifelong conditions:

• Blindness or color blindness

• Limited motor control

• Partial or total deafness

• Speech disorders

• Cognitive challenges

Rather than designing for clinical labels, it’s more effective to design for specific human challenges: difficulty remembering, difficulty distinguishing colors, difficulty manipulating small controls. When the focus shifts from diagnosis to experience, solutions become clearer and more humane.

3. Pointer Target Spacing

Ensuring that interactive elements are easily selectable is another focus of WCAG 2.2. The Pointer Target Spacing criterion requires that touch targets have adequate spacing to prevent accidental activation of adjacent elements, improving usability for users with mobility issues.

4. Redundant Entry

WCAG 2.2 also aims to reduce redundant actions for users. The Redundant Entry criterion requires that users should not have to re-enter information that they have previously provided unless necessary.

In this situation, the term "inclusive user experience design" comes into play. Inclusive user experience design involves people with all social identities and disabilities. This inclusive design allows individuals to use and benefit from the product. Since people have different backgrounds, an inclusive design strives for everyone to be able to use the product.

Users want to discover what they are looking for and quickly and efficiently grasp the information they see. On the other hand, high-level content that uses complex language or data causes difficulties for users with cognitive issues, language problems, low reading ability and many other problems. 


Your content needs to be simple for all end users to understand in order to appeal to all readers. Simplification to simplicity is a subtle way to communicate that a brand cares about all its users and helps build trust.



3. Incorporate AI-based Assistance Tools 

An inclusive UX design is the most efficient way to reach a global audience worldwide. Therefore, artificial intelligence, plug-ins and other technologies that enable users with different abilities to use the content or product are an important requirement. Inclusive designs also enable AI technologies that translate information into different languages to provide access for people who need translation. 


4. Effective Utilization of Images and Illustrations 

Use photos, symbols, drawings and other illustrations to make the content more understandable. Pictures, logos and drawings can convey thousands of words. However, they are all so simple that anyone can learn through them.


5. Utilize More Tools Based on Voice Assistance 

Voice assistant tools not only help the hearing impaired, but also the physically fit. For example, the inclusive designs of UX, which offer reading assistance or text-to-speech features in the product or content, also allow people with visual impairments to access information. 9. Embracing the Power of Specificity 

A design strategy known as inclusive UX design aims to create products and services that are usable, enjoyable and accessible to everyone, regardless of their needs, circumstances or abilities. Specificity, i.e. designing for unique users rather than a broad, fictional or average user, is a critical component of inclusive design.


In inclusive UX design, designers can develop more specialised and successful solutions that address the particular needs and preferences of different people by embracing the power of specificity. Designing for specific disabilities, cultures, languages, technologies or use situations can fall under this category. 


Adopting Specificity in inclusive UX design has several advantages, such as: 

  • Improved usability: By designing for specific consumers, designers can take into account the particular difficulties and obstacles these users face and develop more logical and simple solutions for them. 
  • Improved accessibility: By taking individual disabilities into account, designers can provide more accessible goods and services that are easier for users.

  • WCAG - The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has created the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to improve the accessibility of web content for people with disabilities. The WCAG provide suggestions for addressing various accessibility issues in web design, including visual, auditory, cognitive and motor disabilities. 
  • ISO 9241 - An international standard called ISO 9241 provides recommendations for the ergonomic design of human-computer interfaces. Usability topics covered by ISO 9241 include usability concepts, user interface design and user-centred design methods. 
  • IDRC - The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has developed the Human-Centred Design Toolkit to help designers develop more inclusive and user-centred designs. User research, prototyping and usability testing are just some of the design-related topics covered in the toolkit.


Conclusion 

A product is not perfect if it is inaccessible to a certain group of people. By applying inclusive design, you can develop products that are accessible to people from different backgrounds. An excellent inclusive UX design strives to provide a positive user experience for everyone who comes into contact with the product. 

Designers can use the inclusive design method to develop products that work effectively not only for members of the design team but for everyone, reaching a wider audience that can benefit from your product or service.

We are part of the massive diversity. We are not actually disabled but we are living with a disability.

The hardware and software we are using are disabled. The hardware and software need to be enabled to work with the range of human diversity.


The world is getting older, by 2030, There are going to be more people in retirement age than babies in the United State of America. The number is expected to reach 78 million many acquire disabilities but not identify as a person with disability. Currently 8% of the world’s population is above 65 years which is expected to rise to 17% by 2030 from 901 million to 1.4 billion. (Source)


1 billion people worldwide have some kind of disability, and this number is like to grow as world becomes older. (Source)


What is Universal Design?

It is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. This is not a special requirement, for the benefit of only a minority of the population. It is a fundamental condition of good design. If an environment is accessible, usable, convenient and a pleasure to use, everyone benefits from it.



In 1997, Ronald led a working group of architects, product designers, engineers, and environmental design researchers, to create the 7 principles of universal design to help guide the design process of environments, products, and communications.

Here is a summary of the 7 principles: -


Principle 1: Equitable Use

The design should be useful and marketable to customers with diverse abilities.


Principle 2: Flexibility in Use

The design contains a wide range of personal preferences and abilities.


Principle 3: Simple and Intuitive Use

Make sure the use of the design is super easy to understand, regardless of the experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level the user have.


Principle 4: Perceptible Information

The design transmits necessary information efficiently to the user, irrespective of ambient conditions or the user's physical abilities.


Principle 5: Tolerance for Error

The design should be able to reduces risks and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.


Principle 6: Low Physical Effort 

The design should be used effectively and easily and with a minimum of exhaustion.


Principle 7: Size and Space for Approach and Use

Right size and space is offered for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user's body size, posture, or mobility.
