Tips & Tricks for a Successful Online Portfolio

At Toptal we screen a lot of designers, so over time we have learned what goes into making a captivating and coherent portfolio. Each designer’s portfolio is like an introduction to an individual designer’s skill set and strengths and represents them to future employers, clients and other designers. It shows both past work, but also future direction. There are several things to keep in mind when building a portfolio, so here is the Toptal Guide of tips and common mistakes for portfolio design.

1. Content Comes First

The main use of the portfolio is to present your design work. Thus, the content should inform the layout and composition of the document. Consider what kind of work you have, and how it might be best presented. A UX designer may require a series of animations to describe a set of actions, whereas the visual designer may prefer spreads of full images.



The portfolio design itself is an opportunity to display your experiences and skills. However, excessive graphic flourishes shouldn’t impede the legibility of the content. Instead, consider how the backgrounds of your portfolio can augment or enhance your work. The use of similar colors as the content in the background will enhance the details of your project. Lighter content will stand out against dark backgrounds. Legibility is critical, so ensure that your portfolio can be experienced in any medium, and considers all accessibility issues such as color palettes and readability.

You should approach your portfolio in the same manner you would any project. What is the goal here? Present it in a way that makes sense to viewers who are not essentially visually savvy. Edit out projects that may be unnecessary. Your portfolio should essentially be a taster of what you can do, a preparation for the client of what to expect to see more of in the interview. The more efficiently that you can communicate who you are as a designer, the better.

2. Consider Your Target Audience

A portfolio for a client should likely be different than a portfolio shown to a blog editor, or an art director. Your professional portfolio should always cater to your target audience. Edit it accordingly. If your client needs branding, then focus on your branding work. If your client needs UX Strategy than make sure to showcase your process.

Even from client to client, or project to project your portfolio will need tweaking. If you often float between several design disciplines, as many designers do, it would be useful to curate a print designer portfolio separately from a UX or visual design portfolio.

3. Tell the Stories of Your Projects

As the design industry has evolved, so have our clients, and their appreciation for our expertise and what they hire us to do. Our process is often as interesting and important to share with them, as the final deliverables. Try to tell the story of your product backwards, from final end point through to the early stages of the design process. Share your sketches, your wireframes, your user journeys, user personas, and so on.

Showing your process allows the reader to understand how you think and work through problems. Consider this an additional opportunity to show that you have an efficient and scalable process.



4. Be Professional in Your Presentation

Attention to detail, both in textual and design content are important aspects of any visual presentation, so keep an eye on alignment, image compression, embedded fonts and other elements, as you would any project. The careful treatment of your portfolio should reflect how you will handle your client’s work.



With any presentation, your choice of typeface will impact the impression you give, so do research the meaning behind a font family, and when in doubt, ask your typography savvy friends for advice.

5. Words Are As Important As Work

Any designer should be able to discuss their projects as avidly as they can design them. Therefore your copywriting is essential. True, your work is the main draw of the portfolio - however the text, and how you write about your work can give viewers insight into your portfolio.

Not everyone who sees your work comes from a creative, or visual industry. Thus, the descriptive text that you provide for images is essential. At the earlier stages of a project, where UX is the main focus, often you will need to complement your process with clearly defined content, both visual diagrams, and textual explanation.

Text can also be important for providing the context of the project. Often much of your work is done in the background, so why not present it somehow? What was the brief, how did the project come about?

Avoid These Common Mistakes

The culture of the portfolio networks like Behance or Dribble have cultivated many bad habits and trends in portfolio design. A popular trend is the perspective view of a product on a device. However, these images often do little to effectively represent the project, and hide details and content. Clients need to see what you have worked on before, with the most logical visualisation possible. 

Showcasing your products in a frontal view, with an “above the fold” approach often makes more sense to the non-visual user. Usually, the best web pages and other digital content are presented with no scrolling required. Avoid sending your website portfolio as one long strip, as this is only appropriate for communicating with developers.

Ensure that you cover the bases on all portfolio formats. Today it is expected for you to have an online presence, however some clients prefer that you send a classic A4 or US letterhead sized PDF. You need to have the content ready for any type of presentation.

Try to use a consistent presentation style and content throughout the projects in your portfolio. Differentiate each project with simple solutions like different coloured backgrounds, or textures, yet within the same language.

A Design Workflow Tutorial for Developers: Deliver Better UI/UX On Time

Working with a great designer or design team can be an invaluable asset to any team. With clear communication channels, and free-flowing co-operation, the designer should give you everything you need to speed up the building process and limit questions and confusion as much as possible.
What can you, the UX developer, do to ensure that the product you have built is delivered in a timely manner without sacrificing the quality of the user interface and user experience?




My answer: Get your designers involved from day one, and keep them involved throughout the entire UI/UX development process. Make sure to establish clear communication lines and consistent messaging between developers and the designers.

Do You Have Everything You Need?

The worst thing that can happen during the implementation of any UI is __lack of communication between the designer and the developer __(unless they’re the same person). Some designers think their job is done once the PSD is sent over. But, that’s just wrong! You must create an always-on communication workflow that lasts beyond the delivery of the PSDs.

Projects where the designer just submits the design files, and the developer just implements them, are the projects that just fail.

In many cases, it will take time before the designers see the actual UI/UX design implementation. To their surprise, the build is often completely different from the initial submission. (This happened to me more than once. I have sent over source files with complete descriptions and interaction prototypes, but when I finally saw the project, months later, it had a different layout, different colors, and no interactions in place.)
Some designers might hate me for this, as this design workflow requires a lot of “extra” work on their side. However, creating and delivering full assets and information, in an organized way, is better for the project and the team as a whole.
If a developer has everything that they need in front of them, it will speed up the process. A clean PSD is just not enough.
What do you need to get the job done effectively and efficiently?
These are the assets that a developer should expect from the designer to bring a UI/UX design to implementation:
·    Resource file - The designer should place every element of the app in one file. This file should contain buttons, checkboxes, header styles, fonts, colors, etc. Basically, based on the information in this file, the developer should be able to recreate any interface from scratch. It’s much easier for a developer to export any element from a single PSD, than to search multiple files for it.

·    Assets - Make sure that developers get all the required assets, as source files should not be touched anymore.

·    Interaction prototypes - Days of “static screens” are long gone. Using smart interactions and animations, to smooth-out UX design workflow and implementation, is a common practice now. But, you can’t just say “this will slide in from the left” to a developer. The designer should create the actual prototype of that interaction. The prototype should include information like speed, velocity, etc., and the designer is expected to specify each of these values.

·     Naming convention - Request a file naming structure to keep things organized. It’ll make it easier for both of you to navigate files. (No one likes to have things hidden in a background folder.)

·     HDPI Resources - We live in “hard times”, with the huge density of the screens. Make sure that the designer will deliver images in all of the required resolutions, so your application will look crispy everywhere. Note: use as many vectors as possible; it’s going to help you a lot (svg).

If you do find something else missing during the implementation, don’t be afraid; ping the designer and ask for it. Never skip, and never skimp! You are members of the same team, and your job is to deliver the best possible product. If a designer fails, you fail as well.

Work In-Progress

Utilize your designers during the UI/UX development process. Don’t keep them in the sidelines expecting them to just “push the pixels.” A designer sees possible innovations even before the implementation starts. To take advantage of this, keep them in the loop. Provide them with access to see, and test, the work in progress. I’m well aware that no one likes to share unfinished projects. But, it is much easier to make changes in the middle of a build than at the end. Doing so may save you time and prevent unnecessary work. Once you give the designer a chance to test the project, ask him to compile a list of problems and solutions, and suggest improvements.
What to do when a developer has an idea that would change the look of an application? Discuss it with thedesigner, and never allow a developer to modify the design, without consulting the designer. This design workflow will assure that the build stays on track. A great designer has a reason for every element on the screen. Taking a single piece out, without understanding why it’s there, could ruin the user experience of the product.

UI/UX Design Project Management

Designers think that developers can bring a design to life in one day, or even in one hour. But, like great design, great development takes time and effort. Keep your anxious designer at bay by letting him see the progress of the build. Using external project management software, to make sure every revision is accounted for, is a great way to make sure you don’t miss important information discussed in an email conversation or a Skype session. And let’s be honest: sometimes changes and activities aren’t even communicated until they happen.
Whatever solution you use, be sure to choose one workflow process that the whole team will adopt and consistently use. On our team, I tried to push Basecamp because that’s what I was using, but our front-end developers thought it had limited features. They were already using other project management software to track bugs, progress, etc., such as JIRA, GitHub, and even Evernote. I understood that project tracking and management should be kept as simple as possible, so I migrated my UI design workflow to JIRA. I wanted make sure they understood my workflow and progress, but I did not want them to feel like design was another thing to manage.
Here are a few suggestions for a project management tool:
·     Basecamp - Tracks the progress of the design and development related tasks, and easily lets you export tasks. It also has a simple mobile client.

·     JIRA - A fully customizable platform where you can easily set up custom boards for different areas. For example, organize boards to track activities such as back-end, front-end, design, etc. I think the mobile client is a bit weak, but it is a great solution for bigger teams and includes a bug tracking feature.

·     Email - This is great for setting up a conversation or sending images. But please be careful if you use email for feedback. Things can easily get lost.
You can also try Trello and other project management software, but the most widely used in our industry are Basecamp and JIRA. Again, the most important thing is to find a project management system that everyone can use on a consistent basis, as otherwise it’s a moot point.

UX Design And Development Come Together

The designer and the developer are a powerful combination. Be sure to brainstorm UI and UX together as often as possible. Developers should be willing to help a designer conceive ideas, while a designer should have at least a basic knowledge of the technology that is being used.
Figure out the design workflow together. Don’t just blindly implement what your designers create. Be proactive, and create something that looks beautiful and has a great user experience, by taking advantage of your two different perspectives. Designers think outside of the box and see crazy animations, ideas, pixels, and buttons, while developers see the technology, speed bumps, and limits.

In my experience, every designer is crazy about pixels and interesting concepts. But sometimes, a designer gets to a point when they have an idea, but the developer pushes back and says, “This isn’t going to work well once it’s implemented. There will be performance consumption issues”. Recently, I was looking to implement a modal window with a blurred background, but this blur caused heavy loading times. To solve this problem, the developer suggested using a regular, full color overlay, which loads faster and retains image quality. Designers, pay attention: Don’t compromise the user experience for the design.

Feedback Loop

Feedback from the designer is crucial, and it has to happen as often as possible. It’s probably the most time (and energy) consuming thing that you will do. But, you need to adopt it to be able to deliver perfect results. Here are couple of UX and UI design worklow tips on how to make your feedback perfect.
·    Be visual - Feedback needs to be as specific as possible. The best way to make it accurate is to take a simple screenshot and highlight a problem you want to fix. It would be even better if you had a pictures of a current implementation vs how it is supposed to look. Visual communication will eliminate 50% of the questions.

·     Be descriptive - Feedback should be accurate. You can’t just say “move this button up”. The designer must specify how many pixels a button should move, what padding should be used etc. Always include an explanation of the problem, and the appropriate solution for it. It’s going to take a lot of time, but it’s worth it.
·     
     Be patient - Keep in mind that the designer and the developers do not share the same focus. If developers don’t fully understand a designer’s idea, it can lead to confusion and bad decisions. In every case, both sides need to be patient and willing to help the other team members. It’s really tough sometimes, but it is a soft skill that every designer and developer should learn.

It’s pretty obvious that these things needs to be combined together to make them into a suitable design workflow. But, what tool can actually help you deliver the feedback?
·         Email - I’m not afraid to say that this is still the most common platform to deliver the feedback. It is totally fine to use it, if you will follow couple of simple rules.
o    First, use single email thread for your feedback. Don’t put every individual tweak to a new email with a different subject.
o    Second, create the list of fixes. Try to sit down and think about every tweak or fix you noticed.
o    And lastly, don’t send huge list at once. Try to break it down to smaller individual lists and go part by part.

·     Skype (Hangouts) - Voice is really powerful tool for the feedback. You can immediately ask and answer questions. But, make sure to take notes and sent over the follow up message (email) after the call.

      Collaboration tools - To be honest, I’m not a big fan of collaboration tools. But, they have a big benefit. They help you to keep feedback in place. Asking and answering questions is fast, and it stays there forever.

Introduction to Responsive Web Design

Nowadays, your website will be visited by a wide variety of devices: desktops with large monitors, mid-sized laptops, tablets, smartphones, and more.
To achieve an optimal user experience as a front-end engineer, your site should adjust its layout in response to these varied devices (i.e., to their varied screen resolutions and dimensions). The process of responding to the form of the user’s device is referred to as (you guessed it) responsive web design (RWD).
Why is it worth your time to study responsive web design examples and shift your focus to RWD? Some web designers, for example, instead make it their life’s work to ensure a stable user experience across all browsers, often spending days on end addressing small issues with Internet Explorer.
This is a foolish approach.

Mashable called 2013 the year of responsive web design. Why? Over 30% of their traffic comes from mobile devices. They project that this number could reach 50% by the end of the year. Across the web in general,17.4% of web traffic came from smartphones in 2013. At the same time, Internet Explorer usage, for example, accounts for just 12% of all browser traffic, down about 4% from this time last year (according to W3Schools). If you’re optimizing for a specific browser, rather than the global smartphone population, you’re missing the forest for the trees. And in some cases, this can mean the difference between success and failure—responsive design has implications for conversion rates, SEO, bounce rates, and more.

What is Responsive Web Design Approach

What’s commonly glossed over about RWD is that it’s not just about adjusting the appearance of your webpages; instead, the focus should be on logically adapting your site for usage across different devices. For example: using the mouse does not provide the same user experience as, say, the touchscreen. Don’t you agree? Your responsive mobile vs. desktop layouts should reflect these differences.
At the same time, you don’t want to be completely rewriting your site for each of the tens of different screen sizes on which it might be viewed—such an approach is simply infeasible. Instead, the solution is to implement flexible responsive design elements that use the same HTML code to adjust to the user’s screen size.
From a technical point of view, the solution lies in this responsive design tutorial: using CSS media queries,pseudo-elements, flexible set grid layouts, and other tools to dynamically adjust to a given resolution.

Media Queries in Responsive Design

Media types first appeared in HTML4 and CSS2.1, which enabled the placement of separate CSS for screen and print. In this way, it was possible to set separate styles for a page’s computer display vis-à-vis its printout.

In CSS3, you can define styles depending on the page width. As page width correlates with the size of the user’s device, this capability thus allows you to define different layouts for different devices. Note: media queries are supported by all major browsers.
This definition is possible through the setting of basic properties: max-width, device-width, orientation, and color. Other definitions are possible as well; but in this, case the most important things to note are minimum resolution (width) and orientation settings (landscape vs. portrait).
The responsive CSS example below shows the procedure for initiating a certain CSS file with respect to the page width. For example, if 480px is the maximum resolution of the current device’s screen, then the styles defined in main_1.css will be applied.

We can also define different styles within the same CSS stylesheet such that they are only utilized if certain constraints are satisfied. For example, this portion of our responsive CSS would only be used if the current device had a width above 480px:

“Smart Zoom”

Mobile browsers use so-called “smart zoom” to provide users with a ‘superior’ reading experience. Basically, smart zoom is used to proportionally reduce page size. This can manifest itself in two ways: (1) user-initiated zoom (for example, tapping twice on an iPhone screen to zoom in on the current website), and (2) initially displaying a zoomed-in version of a web page on load.
Given that we can just use responsive media queries to solve any of the problems at which smart zoom might be targeted, it’s often desirable (or even necessary) to disable zoom and ensure that your page content always fills the browser:

By setting initial-scale to 1, we control the initial page zoom level (that is, the amount of zoom upon page load). If you’ve designed your web page to be responsive, then your fluid, dynamic layout should fill the smartphone screen in an intelligent way without requiring any initial zoom.
In addition, we can disable zoom completely with user-scalable=false.

Page Widths

Say you’re looking to provide three different responsive page layouts: one for desktops, one for tablets (or laptops), and one for smartphones. Which page dimensions should you target as your cutoffs (e.g., 480px)?
Unfortunately, there’s no defined standard for the page widths to target, but the following example responsive values are often used:
     320px
     480px
     600px
     768px
     900px
     1024px
     1200px
However, a number of different width definitions exist. For example, 320 and Up has five default CSS3 Media Query increments: 480, 600, 768, 992, and 1382px. Along with the given example in this responsive web development tutorial, I could enumerate at least ten other approaches.
With any of these reasonable sets of increments, you can target most devices. In practice, there is usually no need to separately handle all of the aforementioned examples of page widths—seven different resolutions is probably overkill. In my experience, 320px, 768px, and 1200px are the most commonly used; these three values should be sufficient for targeting smart phones, tablets/laptops, and desktops, respectively.

Psuedo-Elements

Building on top of your responsive media queries from the previous example, you also might want to show or hide certain information programatically based on the size of the user’s device. Luckily, this too can be accomplished with pure CSS as outlined in the tutorial below.
For starters, hiding some elements (display: none;) can be a great solution when it comes to reducing the number of on-screen elements for a smartphone layout, where there’s almost always insufficient space.
But beyond that, you can also get creative with CSS pseudo-elements (selectors), e.g., :before and :after.Note: once again, pseudo-elements are supported by all major browsers.
Pseudo-elements are used to apply specific styles to specific portions of an HTML element, or to select a certain subset of elements. For example, the :first-line pseudo-element lets you define styles solely on the first line a certain selector (e.g., p:first-line will apply to the first line of all ps). Similarly, the a:visited pseudo-element will let you define styles on all as with links previously visited by the user. Clearly, these can come in handy.
Here’s a simple responsive design example in which we create three different layouts for a login button, one apiece for desktop, tablet, and smartphone. On the smartphone, we’ll have a lone icon, while the tablet will have the same icon accompanied by “User name”. Finally, for the desktop, we’ll also add a short instructional message (“Insert your user name”).

So, Where Should I Start for Responsive Web Design?

In this tutorial, we’ve established some of the building blocks for responsive web design (i.e., media queries and pseudo-elements) and laid out some examples of each. Where do we go from here?
The first step you should take is to organize all of your webpage’s elements into various screen sizes.
Responsive layout

Take a look at the desktop version of the layout presented above. In this case, the content on the left (the green rectangle) could serve as some sort of main menu. But when devices with lower resolution are in-use (e.g., a tablet or smartphone), it might make sense for this main menu to be displayed in full width. With media queries, you could implement this behavior as follows:

Unfortunately, this basic approach is often insufficient as your front-end grows in complication. As a site’s content organization is often differs significantly between mobile and desktop versions, the user experience eventually depends on the use of not only responsive CSS, but also HTML and JavaScript.
When determining responsive layouts for different devices, several key elements are important. Unlike desktop versions where we have enough space for the content, smartphone development is more demanding. More than ever, it’s necessary to group specific contents and hierarchically define the importance of individual parts.

The various uses of your content are also important. For example, when your user has a mouse, they can set the cursor above certain elements to get more information, so you (as the web developer) can leave some information to-be gathered in this way—but this won’t be the case when your user is on a smartphone.
In addition, if you leave buttons on your site that then render on smartphones as smaller than a typical finger, you’ll create uncertainty in the usage and feeling of your site. Notice that in the image above, the standard web view (on the left) renders some elements completely unusable when viewed on a smaller device.
Responsiveness in mobile

Such behavior will also increase the chances that your user makes an error, slowing down their experience. In practice, this can manifest itself as decreased page views, fewer sales, and less overall engagement.

Other Responsive Design Elements

When using media queries, one should keep in mind the behavior of all page elements, not just those that are being targeted, especially when using fluid grids, in which case (as opposed to fixed dimensions) the page will be fully filled at any given moment, increasing and decreasing content size proportionally. Since widths are set in percentages, graphical elements (i.e., images) can get distorted and mangled under such a fluid layout. For images, one solution is as follows:

A Few Words on Fluid Grid Systems

When we discuss the process of full design adaptation, we often look at optimal viewing experience (from the user’s perspective). Such a discussion should include maximum facilitated usage, element importance (based on visible page regions), facilitated reading, and intuitive navigation. Among these categories, one of the most important components is content width adjustment. For example, the so-called fluid grid systems have set elements, i.e., elements based on relative widths as percentages of the overall page. In this way, all elements in the responsive web design system automatically adjust with the size of the page.
Although these fluid grid systems are closely related to what we’ve been discussing here, they’re really a whole separate entity that would require an additional tutorial to discuss in detail. Therefore, I will just mention some major frameworks that support such behavior: Bootstrap, Unsemantic, and Brackets.

Conclusion

Until recently, website optimization was a term exclusively reserved for customization of functionality based on different web browsers. Alongside the inevitable struggle with different browser standards that we face today, this term now assumes adapting to devices and screen sizes with responsive web design as well. To cut it on the modern web, your site must know not only who’s viewing it, but how.
